Firm Overview

A Law Boutique

Vercruysse Murray & Calzone, P.C. (formerly Vercruysse Metz & Murray) was formed in 1996 by five highly experienced and nationally recognized labor and employment attorneys from a major Detroit law firm specializing in providing counseling and litigation services to local and national employers.

The formation of our firm was motivated in large part by the increasing demand from large and small businesses to be represented by highly skilled labor and employment attorneys without having to incur the large overhead costs of a full service law firm. With our firm, clients receive major law firm experience at boutique rates.  Our legal practice continues to be governed by one prevailing goal: to provide the best legal representation possible for our clients in a cost-efficient manner.

Located in the Detroit, Michigan suburb of Bingham Farms, we serve a large number of local, national, and international employers who value our creative and innovative solutions to their problems, our responsiveness and attention to detail, our ability to complete assignments in a timely manner, and our commitment to providing sound legal advice and obtaining the best possible results.

Expanding Expertise

Over the past thirteen years our labor and employment law boutique of eight attorneys has grown to a firm of 14 attorneys, including the addition of a four-attorney business immigration practice group. To complement our continued proficiency in labor and employment matters on behalf of employers we now provide our clients with expertise and services in the areas of immigration law, commercial litigation, business torts, and general litigation.

The national reputation of our firm has grown along with its size. Four of our attorneys – Robert Vercruysse, Gregory Murray, David Calzone, and Virginia Metz (retired) – have been selected by their peers from across the United States as members of the American Bar Association’s College of Labor and Employment Lawyers. The same four attorneys and Susan Hartmus Hiser are also members of the American Employment Law Council. Vercruysse, Murray, Calzone and Dorothy Hanigan Basmaji are listed in various editions of The Best Lawyers in America, and Vercruysse, Murray, Calzone, Hiser and Daniel J. Bernard are Fellows of the Michigan State Bar Foundation. Robert Vercruysse, Virginia Metz and David Calzone have all served as Chair of the Labor and Employment Section of the State Bar of Michigan.

Not Just Labor & Employment Law

Vercruysse Murray & Calzone’s attorneys specialize in labor and employment law, ERISA litigation, education law, business immigration law, commercial and business tort litigation, and general litigation representing private and public sector employers and multi-employer associations.

A significant portion of our work comes from in-house counsel and law firms located across the country who have come to rely on our advice and expertise in resolving complex labor issues resulting from the sale, merger or acquisition of a corporation, plant closures, and large force reductions; sensitive employment issues such as problem employees, terminations, sexual harassment, and violence in the workplace; and complex cases involving difficult and cutting edge issues. Our Immigration Team provides our clients with the assistance to successfully secure and retain the specialized employees they need to survive in a global economy and stay compliant with government regulations.

Contributing to the Legal Community

Our firm’s attorneys have a number of publications to their credit, including the monthly Michigan Employment Law Letter, several articles in legal periodicals, and chapter contributions and book editing responsibility for the following books: Employment Litigation in Michigan (ICLE 2004), Employment Discrimination Law (BNA 2002), Age Discrimination in Employment Law (BNA 1999), Employment Law in Michigan: An Employer’s Guide (ICLE 2005), The Handbook of Fraud Detterence (2007) and Michigan Wrongful Discharge and Employment Discrimination Law (ICLE 1994).

Our firm also takes its expertise into the classroom. Several attorneys have taught classes or appeared as guest lecturers at The University of Michigan Law School, Wayne State Law School, University of Detroit Mercy School of Law and Oakland University. Our president, Robert Vercruysse, has served as an Adjunct Professor of Law at The University of Michigan Law School.
